Why a great player still beats a great plugin

Technology keeps getting better, but the records that last are still made by great players, playing. Why musicians matter more than any plugin.

Acoustic guitar tracking session at The Avenue Recording Studio, Cheltenham Melbourne

Recording technology keeps getting better. You can fix timing, tune a vocal, and build an arrangement from samples without a musician in the room. And yet the records that last are still made the old way: by great players, playing.

Interpretation is the instrument

Notes on a page are not a performance. A skilled musician turns an arrangement into something living, and carries their own history into every phrase. Joy, grief, swagger, restraint: these are not things you can draw in with a pencil tool. They come off the player, through the microphone, onto the record.

The room does something plugins can’t

Sessions are conversations. When good musicians play together, they listen, adapt and answer each other, and the takes that come out of that dialogue cannot be built one layer at a time. It is why the live room at The Avenue is set up for a band to play together, with isolation when you need it: the magic moments happen between players, in real time.

Imperfection is the character

Editing can make anything precise. What it cannot do is make something human. The slight push into a chorus, the drag behind the beat, the breath before the line: embraced imperfections are what make a recording feel like a person made it. Great musicians know exactly how much looseness a song can carry, and that judgement is the difference between accurate and alive.

What this means for your session

Put your budget where the performance is. A great player through a modest signal chain will beat a stiff performance through a wall of outboard every time, and when the performance and the signal path are both right, you get the records you keep coming back to. If you need players or want a hand shaping the session, our in-house team can help, and the studio walkthrough is always free.
